Visit to Scripps Institute of Oceanography
reveals highlights of high-priority mission
May 11, 2010
Recently I had the joy of being a guest of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., and having the opportunity to listen to the exploits of the Around the Americas sailing crew sponsored by David Rockefeller Jr. and his Sailors for the Sea Organization. From the Antarctic to Patagonia they collected scientific samples, took pictures and made some 50-plus stops to educate people about the plight of our oceans. The pictures were breathtaking and the message an epiphany: that basically the Americas are a single entity, rather than separate ones, and should be regarded as such in all our environmental preservation efforts.
Seeing and hearing about the highlights of this high-priority mission was a wonderful way to spend an evening, and a source of genuine inspiration to see the work that the Institute is doing and meet some of the individuals who support these efforts, such as David Rockeller. They deserve all the support we can give them.
